How To Pick The Best Rechargeable Camping Lantern?

Rechargeable battery packs can connect to mains, car batteries, inverters and even USB ports on computers as well as to hand cranks.

Lumens

Light output is measured in Lumens and the higher the lumen, the brighter the light. There are two options for the measure, one is inside, and the other is outside, always check the outside Lumen count, this tells you how much luminosity the light provides outside the light. Focusing the beam is also important, a standard light will provide a basic chrome finish and plastic or hardened glass lens, while high focus beams will direct the light using special lenses and reflection materials. Some models come with the ability to choose the luminosity by using part or all of the LED array.

Lantern Lumens tend to start around 40 and go as bright as 700. The basic range is between 150 to 3590 lumens. To understand the difference in the Lumen strength, consider that 100 lumens are for lighting a tent, or looking around a campsite. 200 lumens will light up a campsite, and 300 lumens is daylight in the campsite at night.

Size & Weight

Consider that size and weight are not always relational since materials do weight differently. However, as a rule of thumb, the bigger the battery pack the heavier the light. This is the real ratio and not the housing material unless you buy a cast iron one.

You should buy a power pack that lasts for at least 48 hours; this will assure you of enough lighting for a good campsite experience. 24 hours can be reached with a good lithium-ion battery pack that is fully charged on some models. Most modern models, including the best ones presented here, will last for over 100 hours and more.

Water Resistance

It is always best to invest in a water-resistant model for camping. After all, camping is all about the outdoors and rain is one of those outdoor environments you encounter. As such, a waterproof lantern will provide you with light even during the harshest of storms. If you want a light that can be submerged under water, then you want an IPX-8 rating, an IPX-4 rating is perfect for general outdoor use, anything less should not be considered.

Features

Some lanterns that last over 100 hours are great power packs for electronic devices, so consider buying one with a USB outlet so you can use the lanterns power pack to charge your cell phone and other lightweight electronics. Make sure that the lantern is easy to clean, and that the I/O’s are all coverable to assure they don’t get filled with grit, dirt, mud, sand, etc.

Accessories

Consider a loop or lantern hook to hold it as well as hang it up. Make sure your lantern comes with easy to use knobs but are rugged enough to be accurate and don’t break. Consider legs to support the lantern when there is nowhere to hand it and make sure the legs are high enough to place over a wet surface, even if you do have a waterproof model.
